Pre-Columbian, Gulf Coast Mexico, Vera Cruz culture, ca. 3rd to 7th century CE. A lovely hand-built ceramic figural vessel with a planar base, tall walls, a slightly splayed rim, and a deep interior cavity. The depicted figure is seated with sinuous arms resting upon bent legs, with a broad chest, shoulders flush with the exterior of the vessel, and a stylized head comprised of slit eyes, a thin mouth, a petite nose, and circular earspools with four perforations each. The head is capped with an ornate headdress decorated with a zigzag and spotted panel beneath a densely-stippled upper band. Highly-burnished and covered in a pale-orange slip, this is a wonderful figural example from ancient Mexico! Size: 4.75" W x 7" H (12.1 cm x 17.8 cm).

Condition
Age-commensurate surface wear and abrasions, small nicks and chips to head, arms, legs, base, rim, and vessel exterior, with some fading to finer incised details and pale-orange coloration, and some areas of fire-darkening. Light earthen deposits throughout.
