Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Pacific Slope, Diquis/Nicoya region, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. Carved from a single piece of volcanic stone, a metate depicting an animal, perhaps a reptile given the knobby skin, with a head at one end and a tail at the other, standing upon four legs. Metates were initially created to grind foods such as corn, certainly a utilitarian purpose, as well as hallucinogenic substances, medicines, etc. for ceremonial rituals; however, they evolved into meaningful ritual objects in and of themselves, replete with strong iconography and intriguing sculptural forms have transformed these objects into much more than pragmatic tools. Size: 9.875" L x 6.125" W x 3" H (25.1 cm x 15.6 cm x 7.6 cm)
