West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba peoples, ca. mid 20th century CE. A light-brown wood carving of a standing woman with an elongated rectangular chest and a large crest atop her head. Her facial features are stylized in characteristic Yoruba fashion with large almond-shaped eyes, a flattened nose, cupped ears, and facial scarification marks on either cheek. A staff like this is called an "Ose Shango" staff, carried and danced with by members of the Shango cult. Shango is the Yoruba deity of thunder and lightning; the woman carved on the staff is meant to represent a worshipper of Shango. Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 16.75" H (42.5 cm); 17.125" H (43.5 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA, acquired prior to 1970

Condition
Losses to crest, one arm, neck, body, and legs. Age-commensurate surface wear and abrasions, small nicks to face, body, and legs, with a couple of stable hairline fissures, and light discoloration. Light earthen deposits and nice brown patina throughout.
