Description
Stereoviews, or stereographs, consist of two nearly identical photographs or photomechanical prints, paired to produce the illusion of a single three-dimensional image, usually when viewed through a stereoscope. They were extremely popular from the mid-1800's to the early 20th century. The item you are bidding on is a high quality pair of original prints encased within the curvature of a rigid board and are considered distinguished collectibles that continue to rise in value and rarity after 160 years of existence.
BACKSTORY: In January 1898 the battleship U.S.S Maine went to Havana to help evacuate American citizens endangered by the fighting between Cuban revolutionaries and loyalist forces in their fight for independence from the Spain. At 9.40pm on the night of 15 February 1898 the United States battleship Maine, riding quietly at anchor in Havana harbour, was suddenly blown up, apparently by a mine, in an explosion which tore her bottom out and sank her, killing 260 officers and men on board. When the ship exploded in the harbor, the United States blamed Spain. This was the start of the Spanish-American War..As well as the famous, heralded cry of "REMEMBER THE MAINE".
The absolute exquisite tone and detail of this fine antique photograph is one of the very best pictures ever to surface of the USS Maine, thus giving it vaulted status to any collection.
