A great one, large, early and with multiple large figures, rare, courtly and not religious, Orange silk background is with some horizontal splits in some spots, it has a protective backing but not actually mounted down. For forward conservation, it should be.either; handed over to someone handy with a needle to tack down those modest number of 'split' silk places, ..or, with a new stretcher covered with fabric, then with or without its existing backing, tacked down. The best and probably easiest way is to have an inch deep lucite box frame made of its size, place it in without folds, place a foam type board over, that fits tight, and end up with a protected piece, one showing as without any age related problem and ready for any museum display. An early period silk on silk just cannot be found in nearly this size, museums included, nine and a half feet across. It's just too rare and superb a thing, not to be worth having it in a protected state and put best for its very impressive display. It is apparently of the Chien Lung period, 18th century, extremely rare in such size and actually in quite fine condition. It appears to show the Emperor and his Lady being seated in a central pavillion, being fanned, ..they, surrounded by various courtly figures, in all, eleven.in a garden setting with multitudes of various trees, lush fruit and flowers. -Due to a late but very appropriate arrival, we have selected out fine and some important Asian antiques and art from the property of a New England collector's heir, a good part of which was gotten from Skinner's Auction & other noted sources decades ago.
