Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A fine cast-bronze finial attachment in the shape of a fierce lion head with bulging almond eyes, a bulbous nose with horizontal striations, cupped semicircular ears, puffy jowls, and a gaping mouth bearing four huge fangs. The top of the head boasts several plaited rows of hair which lead towards a cylindrical attachment slot with a rim surrounded by thick concentric circles. This type of attachment was used to top staves, as a sword pommel, or as a rein holder for a chariot. A lovely example that has developed a lustrous russet and emerald patina.
