Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 3rd to 4th century CE. A fine free-blown glass pitcher of aubergine hues with a blue-green trail handle - what a beautiful combination! The vessel presents an elongated rounded body on an everted base, a tall neck, and splayed lip with a folded rim. An aubergine trail is wrapped at the lower end of the neck, and another is wrapped below the rim. The concave base presents a smooth pontil scar. The handle, made from a generous trail of blue-green glass, joins rim to shoulder and was applied and then double-folded before it was attached to the underside of the rim. Fiery areas of silvery and rainbow-hued iridescence accentuate the already beautiful colors of the vessel, imbuing it with an elegant presentation. Size: 3.5" W from handle to opposite end x 8.375" H (8.9 cm x 21.3 cm)

Condition
A couple of pieces reattached to rim. Handle repaired and reattached. Body repaired from a few large pieces. Areas of earthen deposits. Also areas of stunning rainbow iridescence. Vessel possesses a pontil scar or mark which indicates that the vessel was free-blown. (The absence of such a mark would suggest that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time.)
