Description
**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Proto-Nazca, ca. 500 to 200 BCE. A very early textile covered cushion created by an artisan who preceded/anticipated the Nazca. The textile is comprised of tightly woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers of forest green, rosy pink, magenta, autumnal orange, chocolate brown, white, purple, and golden yellow hues. On one side, it depicts a deity or shaman - standing and lifting his arms in an orant-like gesture - flanked by a pair of cacti. On the opposite side is a composition of linked abstract visages with wide open eyes and extending tongues. Both ends are lined with a generous fringe, some of which is twisted in a plait-like manner. Size: 12.5" W x 2.5" H (31.8 cm x 6.4 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private H. J. Westermann collection, Germany
