Description
1805 Charleston C. Prince Porter Slave Hire copper alloy badge, Number 13. Octagonal shaped tag with nearly equilateral sides and a hole at the top for suspension. Front marked "CHARLESTON" in a lunate punch at the top, "No." in a square punch, "13" in individual number punches, "PORTER" in a rectangular punch, and "1805" in a rectangular punch at the bottom. Hallmarked "C. PRINCE" in a rectangular punch on the back. Includes original receipt from Early American History Auctions, Inc. 54.7 mm x 62.0 mm (2.15" x 2.44"). Provenance: Purchased from Early American History Auctions, Inc., October 21, 2006. Estate of Jim Maconkey, Landrum, SC. Note: Charles Prince was a silversmith in Charleston, SC. Condition
Appearance of Fine to Very Fine in places. Dark brown in color, slightly dished, believed to add additional strength to the badge when worn.
