Early 19th century Japanese sword kozuka (sword knife) handle with engraved decoration of a man enjoying a cup of sake that he poured from a double gourd in his hand, his straw hat hanging on a woven fence above rockery ledge as he looks up at a mighty waterfall before him. The scene represents a pilgrim at Kirifuri Waterfall on Mount Kurokami in Shimotsuke Province. Brilliant use of katakiri bori - carving technique recreating the brush strokes used in sumi ink drawings - see finely executed rock textures under his feet. The material of the piece is paktong - an alloy made of copper, nickel and zinc used in Japan in 18th and 19th centuries. Length 3 13/16 inches.
