Description
This is a rare ancient relic from Mali, West Africa and dating back to the 12th-16th centuries. The sculpture measures 14 inches tall x 8 inches deep and 5 inches wide. A seated figure with hands on knees, wearing a large collar and with held held upwards in a skyward gaze. The entire piece is covered in dendrites and appears to have been repaired from 3 or more pieces. Bankoni figures are named for the first place they were discovered, a village close to Bamako. They are some of the oldest known representative figures from the Western Sudan region. Provenance: Ex Private New York city collection All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14.This artifact will include a hard copy of the TL test proving it is an ancient example.
