**First Time At Auction**
Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Sepik River region, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A dramatic, brightly colored wooden decorative carving in the form of a magical anthropomorphic figure, its body highly abstract, consisting of long, curved limbs around a triangular body, with a massive head relatively to the rest of the body. The figure seems crouched within a doorway, standing atop a round, yonic symbol. Low relief breasts on the figure's chest emphasize her femininity. Brightly colored swirling patterns of red, black, white, and pale peach imitate tattoos or body painting. Size: 16.6" W x 25.5" H (42.2 cm x 64.8 cm)
Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
