Oceania, central Papua New Guinea, Wahgi Valley, Mount Hagen, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden bowl of a massive size with a rounded but stable base, flared walls with a thick rim, a shallow basin, and a thick, integral handle protruding from one side of the lower body. Large bowls like this example were used for a multitude of different tasks such as serving, air sifting for rice or other grains, transportation, or preparation, and the smooth basin surface suggests this vessel was used countless times. Minor nicks to rim, base, basin, and handle, otherwise intact and excellent. Light earthen deposits and wonderful patina throughout. The words "M1098" and "Mt. Hagen W.H." written on base with white paint.
