Description
A Graeco-Roman Egyptian turquoise glazed Herm or 'Herma' amulet, c. 2nd Century BC - 2nd Century AD, with bearded male head atop a plinth fronted by male genitalia. L: 29 mm. Well-preserved for the type with suspension loop at back. Statues in this form served an apotropaic function, warding off evil and protection, and were placed at boundary lines and intersections of Roads. The amulets served a similar more personal function. Ex collection of John J. Slocum, Rhode Island.
