Roman, Holy Land, late Roman to early Byzantine, ca. 4th to 6th century CE. Four mold-made terracotta oil lamps from the late Roman to early Byzantine periods. First is a light-orange, slipper-form lamp with a base displaying six low-relief circles, a tab-shaped handle, a wide fill hole, and a small wick spout. Next is a red-orange lamp with a concentric ring base, a tab-shaped handle with three incised vertical lines, a spotted ring around the fill hole, and a Byzantine-style cross within the neck channel. Next is a smaller lamp with a ringed base, ornate geometric designs adorning the fill hole and neck channel, and a lion-headed handle. Last is a slender lamp with a flat base, pinched shoulders with a radiating low-relief design, and an animal-headed handle which is missing its face. A fantastic gathering! Size of largest (circle-design base): 4.375" L (11.1 cm).

Condition
Lion-headed-handle lamp repaired from two halves with small amount of new material around mold halves. All items have expected surface wear commensurate with age and use, small chips around shoulders and bases, fading to designs, light char marks to wick spouts, light fading to pigmentation, with earthen and mineral deposits throughout.
