Description
[Political] Official flag of the Secretary of State during the first term of President Ronald Reagan, circa 1980s, representing Secretaries of State Alexander Haig and George Schultz. Approx: 10’ x 16’. Acquired when it was considered no longer serviceable and was destined to be destroyed by the Department of State in the early 1980s. At the time, a member of the Chesapeake Bay Flag Association consulted with the State Department to update any national flags that changed or were added over the previous six months. Any flags that were determined to be no longer relevant were given as payment for service, and the Secretary of State flag was among one particular lot. The flags were then auctioned to members of CBFA to raise money for preservation and educational projects throughout the year. Includes Ambassador's limo flag.
Condition The colors are still vibrant and the seal has impressive detail on both sides. Interestingly, the heavy braided rope is still attached to the heading, but cut off at the end of the flag. There is wear at the fly end of the flag and some scuff marks along the seal showing that it was flown, but otherwise it is in remarkable condition.
