Description
1866 MORGAN KELLY OATH of LOYALTY to UNION, DALLAS CO., MISSOURI MILITIA OFFICER
Description: 1866 Dallas County, Missouri OATH OF LOYALTY FOR OFFICERS OF THE MISSOURI MILITIA. Official document to swear allegiance to the United States and support the Constitution of the State of Missouri, specifically SECTION 3, ARTICLE II, of the CONSTITUTION ADOPTED 1865. This document was signed by Morgan Kelly, September 13, 1866. Printed document with period ink manuscript "fill-in" information, official Dallas County seal, also 5 cent revenue stamp.
Research indicates that Morgan Kelly was Captain of Company I of the 6th Provisional Regiment, Missouri Militia during the American Civil War(Union). During the war, Missouri was a battle ground border state with armies for both sides of the war, Union and Confederate. After the war, secessionists were banned from political and military service in Missouri. This OATH of LOYALTY gives a unique, eye opening perspective into what life was like in a divided state immediately following the Civil War, with rampant political unrest and a "need to know" where one's loyalties fell.
