Description
Ca. 19th century bronze Khmer Temple Guardian or Lion head, in the Angkor period, style of Banteay Srei 10th century. The “guardians of the gateâ€, are placed around the outside of a temple to serve both as greeters and defenders, they were specifically intended to protect the principle entrances of temples.
The head is carved in the round with an ornate coiffure, full lips and almond-shaped eyes with incised pupils beneath gently curving brows. Please contact us for high resolution images of the piece.
