This unique book is Benny Carter's personal copy of Benny Carter, A Life in American Music, two volumes (422 + 418 pages), published by The Scarecrow Press and the Institute of Jazz Studies in 1982, and bound into one volume by Ginesta Bookbinding. This has been signed by the authors and by almost all members of the American Jazz Orchestra, the group that presented Carter with this gift. The textured dark blue leather cover (app. 6" x 8.5"), with gilt lettering to the spine, gilt design to the raised ends of the spine and to the front, is near fine, with one short scratch to the front, and a few light scuffs, but no notable stains, no tears or color fade. The spine is straight and securely attached. The gilt is in fine condition. The gilt page edges are bright and clean all around. The only writings in the book are the author and musician signatures (Gary Giddins, John Lewis, Roberta Swann, Bill Easley, John Purcell, Virgil Jones, Dick Katz, Ron Carter, Remo Palmier, Jimmy Knepper, Mel Lewis, Danny Bank, Bob Millikan, Loren Schoenberg among others). The only other extraneous element is the stamped dating of the gift, February 26, 1987, above the signatures (see photos). The pages are clean throughout the book, with all text as new. The binding is tight, with no loose or missing pages. There are no page tears or creases.
