John Wesley Crockett, Davy's Son, Signs Legal Document 7 Months before "King of the Wild Frontier" is Killed at the Alamo

2pp partly printed and partly handwritten legal document signed by John Wesley Crockett (1807-1852) as "John W. Crockett DC" on the first page, lower right. Signed at Trenton, Tennessee on September 3, 1835. Annotated and docketed verso. The document is secured in a double-sided floating mount; the hinged glass window allows viewing access to both sides and reveals a portrait of Crockett underneath. Cream canvas mat and mahogany finished frame, not examined out of frame. With expected paper folds, some well-creased and brittle, overall toning, and scattered edge chipping, else very good to near fine. The document measures 8.125" x 12.75" while the overall frame size measures 16.25" x 21" x 1.5". Provenance: From the Davy Crockett Collection of David Zucker, screenwriter and film director. Comes with a tag pencil-inscribed "Zucker - lender" probably dating from a past museum loan in Washington, D.C.

The writ bearing "State of Tennessee" letterhead commands the Sheriff of Gibson County (in northwestern Tennessee) to liquidate the land, livestock, and personal possessions of defendants John Page and James Turner so that unpaid debts and damages in the amount of $521.25 cents can be paid to plaintiff Calvin Jones by the next court session to be held in December 1835.

John Wesley Crockett was the eldest son of famed frontier folk hero and Tennessee Congressman Davy Crockett (1786-1836) and his first wife Polly Finley. In addition to being a trained lawyer, John Wesley Crockett represented his father's former constituents from the 12th Congressional District between 1837-1841.

The younger Crockett signed this document in September 1835, just seven months before his father would be killed at the Battle of the Alamo in March 1836 during the Texan Revolution.
