Indonesia, Borneo, Kalimantan, Dayak peoples, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved, very tall wooden marker - known as a Hampatong Pantak or Patong Pantak territory marker - depicting an abstract human figure, the head with minimalist facial features and a high headdress, a rendering that suggests hands are held over his/her abdominal region and legs are joined together. The hampatong (also called hempatong, empatung, tempatong, or kepatong) is the collective name for Dayak wooden statues. These figures traditionally portray ancestors and other supernatural guardians of the Dayak religious system. Each statue is believed to possess its own meaning and function. Size: 51" H (129.5 cm); 51.25" H (130.2 cm) on included custom stand.
