Description
**Originally Listed At $300**
Africa, Republic of Benin, Fon peoples, ca. mid 20th century CE. A tall, hand-carved wooden "Bocio" figure by the Fon peoples. This female Bocio (or Boccio, literally "empowered cadaver") stands atop an integral circular plinth with delineated legs. Her tubular torso displays a pair of sinuous arms, and her large head is comprised of recessed eyes, a petite mouth, and a neatly-presented coiffure. Boccio figures were traditionally placed in shrines where they were sunk into the earth and allowed to age and weather with exposure. They are relatively small in scale; however, their spiritual presence is great. Fon Bocio statues are intended to protect by deterring evil spirits. They do not represent individual spirits; instead, their human phenotypes are believed to be repositories for spiritual forces. Size: 12" H (30.5 cm); 12.5" H (31.8 cm) on included custom stand.
