Description
"Works of Flavius Josephus", A Translation into English by Sir Roger L'Estrange, Kr. Printed for John Gilmour and John Robb, Glasgow, MDCCLXII [1762]
Volume IV containing:
"The Wars of the Jews". Books 2-7
"The Martyrdom of the Maccabees"
"Philo's Embassy from the Jews of Alexandria to Caius Caligula"
"The Wars of the Jews", is an eye-witness account of the Jewish insurrection against Rome which culminated in the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. As governor of Galilee, Josephus took an active part in the revolt, displaying great courage in the siege of Jotapata by Vespasian in 67 A.D. Josephus later sided with the Romans, and his account of events is clearly designed to appeal to the Roman public, omitting anything that might offend their sensitivities (such as the activities of the Zealots). Nonetheless, it remains an indispensable record of the period. After the destruction of Jerusalem, Flavius Josephus lived as a Roman citizen in the emperor palace, enjoying the luxurious life of a dignitary and scholar. The Book Two describes the events led to the resurrection and conflict. The final, Seventh Book, ends with the post-war proceedings in Rome.
