Henrietta Mabel May (1877/84 - 1971)
Henrietta Mabel May was active/lived in Quebec, British Columbia / Canada. Henrietta May is known for landscape, figure, village scenes, portrait and still life painting.

Biography
She was elected an associate of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1916 (4). In 1920 she was one of the founders of the Beaver Hall Hill Group (see AskART glossary), and in 1933 she was a founding member of the Canadian Group of Painters (see AskART glossary).
In addition to exhibiting with the above organizations she showed with the Art Association of Montreal from 1910 to 1967 and with the Group of Seven in 1928. She also exhibited at the "First Pan-American Exhibition of Oil Paintings", Los Angeles County Museum of Art (1925); the "Exposition d'art Canadien", Musée du Jeu de Paume, Paris, France (1927); the "Exhibition of Paintings, Drawings, Engravings and Sculpture by Artists Resident in Great Britain and the Dominions", Imperial Institute, South Kensington, Britain (1929); "A Century of Canadian Art", Tate Gallery, London, England (1938); the "New York World's Fair", New York City (1939); "Pintura Canadense Contemporanea", Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (1944); and "Canadian Women Artists", Riverside Museum, New York (1947). The Vancouver Art Gallery (B.C.) had a solo exhibition of her work in 1952.
Postumously, her work has been included in many important exhibitions including "From Women's Eyes: Women Painters in Canada" at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre, Kingston, Ontario (1975); "The Group of Seven: Art for a Nation" at the National Gallery of Canada (1995); "The Birth of the Modern: Post-Impressionism in Canadian Art, c.1900-1920" at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, Oshawa, Ontario (2001); and "75 Years of Collecting: Vancouver Art Gallery" at the Vancouver Art Gallery (2006).
Her work is avidly collected. It is also in numerous public collections including the Beaverbrook Art Gallery ( Fredericton, N.B); the Museum of Quebec (Quebec City); the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts; the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa); the Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto); the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Art Gallery of Hamilton (Ontario). Of note, when the Vancouver Art Gallery opened in 1931 only 3 paintings by Canadian artists were purchased for its collection, one was Mabel May's "Autumn in the Laurentians".(5)
