Fifteen (15) Civil War related items, including 1864 bond receipt and Union buttons. 1st item: CSA printed and hand written depository receipt issued in Mobile, Alabama on March 30, 1864, certifying that H. H. Coleman "has paid at this office One thousand Dollars, for which amount Registered Bonds of the Confederate States of America, bearing interest from this date, at the rate of four per cent. per annum, will be issued to him...". Serial # 1540. Depositary signature. Handwritten note indicating that Coleman transferred the bond to C. N. Wilcox, Collector for 40th District, Alabama, witnessed by S. H. Smith, Deputy, dated April, 5, 1865. Housed in a black metal frame with double sided glass with a typed label explaining the receipt. Receipt - 3 7/8" H x 7 7/8" W. 2nd item: Federal Infantry brass coat button, 2-piece construction, depicting the Great Seal of the United States. Extra Quality manufacturer's marks stamped, en verso. Approximately 19 mm dia. 3rd item: Federal Infantry brass coat button, 2-piece construction, depicting the Great Seal of the United States with an "I" in the center of the shield. No visible manufacturer's marks. Approximately 22 mm dia. Note: Found in the vicinity of the Battle of Lookout Mountain, TN, November 24, 1863. 4th-6th items: Three (3) Federal brass buttons, including two (2) coat buttons and one (1) cuff button, 2-piece construction, depicting the Great Seal of the United States. Coat buttons with possible Scovill manufacturer's marks stamped, en verso, no visible manufacturer's marks on cuff button. Approximately 15-22 mm dia. 7th item: Pre Civil War flat brass cuff button, 1-piece construction. No visible manufacturer's marks. Approximately 14 mm dia. Note: 4th-7th items Found in the vicinity of Battle of Nashville, TN, December 15-16, 1864. 8th item: Pre Civil War pair of iron tooth pullers or extractors with associated leather drawstring bag. No visible manufacturer's marks. Extractors - 6 3/4" L. Bag - 5" L. Note: Includes handwritten laminated note reading "Tooth Pullers Great-Great Grand Paw Dukes Circa 1850". 9th-10th item: Two (2) February 17, 1864 Confederate States of America (CSA) $10 Bill from Richmond, Virginia, depicting the portrait of Robert M. T. Hunter, Confederate States Secretary of State and Confederate Senator, right, with a vignette of soldiers and horses pulling a cannon, center. One (1) Seventh Series. Serial # 54240/ pp E. One (1) Serial # 59754/ pp C. Both with "For Register" and "for Treasurer" signatures. 11th item: One (1) January 1, 1863 Confederate States of America (CSA) 25 cent fractional note from Montgomery, Alabama, with a vignette of a horse pulling a loaded wagon, center, portrait of a woman, lower right. Serial # 12.../ pp A. Alabama Governor John Gill Shorter (1818-1872) facsimile signature. Note: This note is part of the "Mobile Hoard". In Mobile, AL during the summer of 1965, a large cardboard box containing mostly small size Alabama wartime notes, came into the hands of Dr. Walter B. Jones. 12th item: One (1) Post or Civil War era carte de visite (CDV) titled "A Typical Yankee" depicting an older man in a Union uniform. Titled in pencil, en verso. 4 1/8" H x 4" W. 13th-14th items: Two (2) CSA postage stamps, including one (1) blue 10 cent stamp depicting a profile portrait of Jefferson Davis and one (1) blue 5 cent stamp depicting a three quarter view of Jefferson Davis. Housed in a plastic sleeve. Stamps range in size from 1" H x 3/4" W to 1 1/8" x 7/8" W. 15th item: Brown leather match safe with four (4) unused matches and one (1) faux tortoise shell pick. No visible manufacturer's marks. 2 5/8" H x 1 1/2" W. Provenance: Descended in the family of Curtis Nash Wilcox, Probate Judge of Choctaw County, Alabama. Biography: The son of Henry and Jeanette Bushnell Wilcox, Curtis Nash Wilcox (1816-1847) was the first circuit court clerk in 1848 and the first elected probate judge (1850-1856) of Choctaw County, Alabama. He also served as the first mayor of Meridian, Mississippi from 1872-1874. While the examining board of the Confederate Army decided that he could not stand active service he held a civil office under the Confederate government and belonged to the Home guards. His son Robert Hill Wilcox (1843-1862) was a Lieutenant Colonel 3rd Regiment, Alabama Cavalry and died during the war at the age of 19. Towards the end of the war, Wilcox was offered the position of Inspector of the Port of Mobile under the Federal government, however refused the position as it required taking the "iron-clad oath". His second wife, Sarah Battilee Dade Winston of Culpepper Count, Virginia was President of the Soldier's Aid Society. (Additional high-resolution photos are available at www.caseantiques.com.)
