Description
Group of Thirteen (13) Civil War & Revolutionary War Items. 1st-9th items: Nine (9) Civil War era brass coat and cuff/sleeve buttons, including one (1) "United We Stand/Divided We Fall" button, three (3) E.T.U. Cadet buttons, one (1) Federal button, three (3) Infantry buttons, and one (1) Artillery button. Makers include Scovill Manufacturing Co., Waterbury, CT, and S. Isaac Campbell & Co., London, England. Ranging in size from approximately 12.7 mm to 19.05 mm dia. 10th item: Partial Civil War era brown leather saddlebag, comprised of a single flap with an interior compartment. 18 1/2" H x 15" W x 1 1/4" D. 11th-12th items: Two (2) fragments cut from historic Massachusetts trees, both originally acquired by the Bonny Kate Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Knoxville, TN, including one (1) with an affixed plaque that reads, "A piece of the Elm tree formerly standing in Cambridge, Massachusetts under which George Washington took command of the American Army / July 3, 1775 / Presented by the City of Cambridge 1924." and one (1) with an ink inscription indicating that it was cut from The Charter Oak "...when old Mrs. Stewart occupied the old Homestead in 1843. Mary A Jewett." Both labeled with museum accession numbers. 2 5/8" H x 5 1/2" W x 2 3/4" D to 4" H x 5 1/2" W x 1 1/2" D. 13th item: Civil War era lithograph titled "Lincoln and Family," depicting a composite image of Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), the 16th president of the United States, and his family reading a book in an interior setting. Housed under glass in an oval giltwood frame. Sight: 9 1/2" H x 7 1/2" W. Framed: 14 1/2" H x 12 1/2" W. Provenance: The collection of a Tennessee institution.
Condition
1st-9th items: All buttons retain shanks, one E.T.U. Cadet button with break to shank. 10th item: Overall good condition with wear, cracking to leather, tears, largest 2 1/2", to be expected from age and manner of use. Retains 6" x 12" section of yoke, and two interior straps, largest 8 1/2" L. Does not retain buckles. 11th-12th items: Overall good condition. Screws missing to plaque. 13th item: Overall good condition with toning. Not examined outside of frame. Frame with areas of loss to gilt, largest 3/4", natural age shrinkage, largest 2 3/4".
