Description
Dated 1582 AD. Fifth issue. Obv: profile bust with rose behind and ELIZABETH D G ANG FRET HI REGINA legend and 'Greek cross' mintmark (for 1578-1589 period"). Rev: long cross over arms with date above and POSVI DEV ADIVTOREM MEV legend and 'sword' mintmark. S. 2573; N. 1998; see BCW p.36 for table of mintmarks and periods of use. 1.54 grams. The 'Greek cross' mintmark, as seen here on the obverse, was used in the period 1 October 1578-17 May 1580; this coin shows that obverse type linked to a 1582 dated reverse showing the correct (for that year) 'sword' mintmark (used during the period 23 August 1582-31 January 1583"). It is likely that an old obverse die was, for some reason, temporarily used with a considerably later reverse. [No Reserve]
Condition
Very fine. Very rare mintmark combination.
