Description
Circa 1850 Middle Tennessee Cherry Sugar Chest. The primary wood of this chest is cherry with poplar secondary wood. Interior of case has a separate box liner divided into three sections. The inter liner or box is attached to case. Interior of box appears as though the builder might have considered partitioning it into four sections originally. The inside of the box has marks for a mortise that was never cut. Dovetailed chest on base construction and dovetailed drawer with chamfered bottom. Chest has been attached to base since it was made. This piece has always been a sugar chest, not a blanket chest converted into a sugar chest. Sugar chest measures 35" High X 26 3/4" Wide X 18 3/4" Deep. From a Corinth, Mississippi estate.
Condition
Condition - Chest is in good condition overall. Interior of box appears as though the builder might have considered partitioning it into four sections originally. The inside of the box has marks for a mortise that was never cut. This piece has some old repairs including a small triangular chip at one front top corner of chest. Older refinish with wear. Pulls are original.
