Bushmiller Ernest
Nancy Creator Ernie Bushmiller Signed Cartoon
A wonderful original illustration by cartoonist Ernie Bushmiller (1905-1982) depicting his most famous cartoon character Nancy, of the eponymous comic strip, signed by him as "Ernie Bushmiller" at lower right. Black crayon on paper. Also personally inscribed, ca. 1950. Overall light toning, else near fine. 9.625" x 11.75".
Bushmiller's character Nancy is depicted at center, complete with her trademark hairbow, helmet-like hair, and benign expression. Bushmiller also inscribed at lower right: "To Mary Gail / Best Wishes / Ernie Bushmiller."
Ernie Bushmiller, a high school drop out with artistic ambitions, first got his start at a New York newspaper. After inheriting the United Feature Syndicate comic strip Fritzi Ritz in 1925, Bushmiller introduced that character's niece, Nancy, in 1933. The adorable child proved so popular that she eventually eclipsed the aunt completely, and the strip was renamed Nancy in 1938. Ernie Bushmiller continued his extremely popular and award-winning comic strip until his death in 1982.
