Description
Late 19th century, 51 x 57 cm, South Persia, Kerman region
In the pile-woven face of this Afshar bag, twigs and a large blossom edged in leaves are arranged asymmetrically on a light red ground. The border is very narrow. The plain red kilim back contains a pile-woven border stripe and a rectangular panel decorated with a diagonal flower. The seams along the sides have come undone so the piece now looks like a rug sampler (vagireh). – Slight signs of age and wear, minor repairs. The upper closure band has survived.
