Description
Second half 19th century, 56 x 56 cm, South East Caucasus, Azerbaijan
Half of a Moghan Shahsavan double bag woven in the sumakh technique. The field shows a striking design of octagons in alternating colours, arranged in offset horizontal rows and enclosing so-called spider güls. The reciprocal trefoil border in the Caucasian style is a characteristic feature of Moghan Shahsavan weavings and rarely encountered in the flatweaves of the tribes inhabiting Persian Azerbaijan. – Only the face of one khorjin half has survived. It has been attached to the kilim back of a different bag and made up into a cushion. Good condition.
