Pair of Antique Chinese Zitan wood Southern officer armchairs. Masterfully constructed with four dowel legs connected by three members and a foot rest extend upward to meet an angular apron which is attached to a square shaped seat. A curved splat rises to connect to the back post. The splat is expertly carved with a lower opening and intricate auspicious motif. Zitan is an extremely dense wood which sinks in water. It is a member of the rosewood family and is botanically classified in the Pterocarpus genus. The lumber is blackish-purple in hue, and its fibers are loaded with deep red pigments which have been used for dye throughout the ages. The fine surface of the wood grain is especially suitable for intricate carvings as can be seen on these magnificent chairs.

Over all in EXCELLENT condition. Some stress of wear. Natural wood imperfection, wood joint mark, minor scratches and dents. Normal consider ages and wears.
