EMPEROR OCTAVIUS AUGUSTUS appears in Oil on panel. It appears to be Northern Italian 18th Century. This appears to be a tondo portrait in profile of Gaius Octavius or Augustus, the first emperor; He portrayed himself as Hercules, the mythical Greek hero, in countless statues. Sylvi, Feminine form of Silvius (of the woods), a name derived from the Latin silva (wood). The name is borne in Roman mythology by Rhea Silvia, a vestal virgin who broke her vows and became mother of Romulus and Remus (Rome). This type of highly decorative portrait was popular during the 17/18th centuries.Painted on two boards. This appears to be to be 17th century. Some paint loss.The artwork is 16 x 12 inches. With frame 19.5 x 15 inches.This item is from the estate of a gentleman from Gaton Lamps on Melrose Ave. Gaton Lamps worked on the interior of the White House with Jackie Kennedy.
