Francis Bicknell Carpenter (American 1830 - 1900) original antique, 19th century, portrait oil painting on canvas of a young adolescent child wearing a white dress & blue bonnet reaching in her basket of flowers. Signed & dated to verso. Circa: New York July, 1855. Measures: 20-1/8" W x 24" H + 4" Frame. From a Palm Beach estate. Local Pick Up or Third Party Shipping Required. Artist Notes: Francis Bicknell Carpenter born at Homer, N.Y., in 1830; he studied for six months in 1844 with Standford Thayer at Syracuse. Elected American National Academy in 1852. Commissioned by the White House & many noted persons sat for him, including Presidents Fillmore, Lincoln, Tyler and Pierce. His most noted work is The Emancipation Proclamation painted in 1864, which was purchased for $25,000 by Miss Mary Elizabeth Thompson, who presented it to Congress in 1877, and it now hangs in the Capitol at Washington. Several of his paintings, among them the portrait of President Fillmore, are in the New York City Hall. Following Lincoln's assassination, Carpenter produced many portraits of Lincoln and his family; some based on memory, others on photographs provided by Lincoln's widow. Carpenter died of "dropsy" an old-fashioned term for Edema on May 23, 1900 in New York and was buried in Glenwood Cemetery, Homer, Cortland County, New York.
