Description
Circa 1770, Britain or Charleston, South Carolina. Handsomely carved and upholstered arm chair with a shaped backrest and wide seat with open arms, resting atop carved square legs. Mahogany secondary wood. H39 7/8" W30" D28" 1000-2000 Note: The chair is sold from the collection of the Hammond-Harwood House Museum, Annapolis, Maryland. It is the exact mate to an original chair in the collection of the Miles Brewton House, Charleston, South Carolina. The chair was donated to the Hammond-Harwood House by Baltimore Collector Mrs. Francis White in 1973. For chair mate see E. Milby Burton Charleston Furniture 1700-1825. P. 119 figure 108. Condition
The piece is in good overall condition. The legs are all original and arms and legs having no breaks or restorations. Carving is nice and pronounced. Refinished likely in the early 20th century. Fabric likely dates to time of refinish.
