Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, late Moche to Sican/Lambayeque culture, ca. 650 to 1000 CE. An interesting blackware pottery vessel, mold-formed and highly-burnished, depicting a seated male figure with crossed legs on a round but stable base. The man presents with a stocky build and powerful shoulders, sinuous arms with constricting bracelets, and a thick neck. A stirrup-shaped handle extends from the rounded back and has a cylindrical spout with a flared lip. The almond-shaped eyes and their pointed outer corners are characteristic of later Sican/Lambayeque stylization, and deep facial contours delineating the cheeks and mouth create a schematized presentation beneath a domed cap. Size: 5.75" W x 6.4" H (14.6 cm x 16.3 cm).

Condition
Area around right hand, foot, and knee repaired from multiple pieces with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Small chips and abrasions to spout rim, head, and body, with areas of fire-darkening, and softening to some facial details. Light earthen deposits and manganese deposits throughout. Old inventory label and collection number in black ink on base.
