Description
Two (2) 18th Century Historical Writings, including Stephen Hopkins, Thomas Paine. 1st item: Manuscript DS. One page handwritten document. Pay order signed by Stephen Hopkins (1707-1785), governor of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, a Chief Justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court, East Greenwich, RI, to Joseph Clark, Esq., General Treasurer, dated September 15, 1770. Issued at the end of Hopkins' term as Chief Justice of the Rhode Island Supreme court, the document reads "...You are to pay to Nathaniel Helme or order Fifteen Dollar out of said Treasury & charge the same to the Colony's account." Signed by Hopkins and countersigned by two justices, lower right. Professionally inlaid into a larger sheet of modern paper. Includes PSA/DNA Letter of Authentication, number AB07369, dated Tuesday, July 26, 2016. 8 1/2" H x 7 1/2" W. 2nd item: Letter Addressed to the Addressers on the Late Proclamation by Thomas Paine, 1792. Printed for H. D. Symonds and Thomas Clio Rickman, London. Octavo, 40 pages, rebound in half black leather with marbled paper sides. 7 3/4" H x 4 5/8" W x 1/4" D. Note: "The late proclamation" refers to the royal proclamation against seditious writings, issued May 21, 1792, and directed particularly against the second part of Paine's "Rights of Man."
Condition
1st item: Overall very good condition. Hopkins signature in clear, legible condition. 2nd item: Original pamphlet with foxinf spots, areas of dampstaining/acid burn, toning, etc to be expected from age. Boards with wear.
