Description
Archive of forty-seven items (47) related to the Budlong Family, Warwick, RI, and Early America. 1st-31st items: Thirty-one (31) letters, documents, and receipts pertaining to Captain Moses Budlong (1704-1789) Warwick, Kent County, RI, and his family including his wives Hannah Staples Budlong and Mary Davis Budlong, his son Samuel Budlong (1735-1816), his grandson James Budlong (1772-1822), including one (1) military related document fragment dated March 1751, one (1) document dated October 19, 1754, two (2) mortgage payments from Moses to Joseph Clarke, dated September 9, 1790 and September 1, 1791, and one (1) land document signed by John R. Arnold with a small plat map, dated November 10, 1784. Includes six (6) receipts, promissory notes, and letters that are related to Warwick, RI. Ranging in size from 3 3/8" H x 4 3/4" W to 8 3/8" H x 7 7/8" W. 32nd item: Brown paper flipbook notepad pertaining to the Court of Chancery, belonging to an individual identified by the name "Morris" inscribed in ink on the front cover. The first several pages are not present, the first pencil inscriptions in the book read "Court of Chancery Ch. IV The office & name of chancellor come from the Roman Empire at first its functions were ministerial afterwards became judicial...". 7" H x 4" W x 1/4" W. 33rd item: ALS. One page handwritten letter fragment. From Captain John Spencer (1693-1774), East Greenwich, RI, recipient unknown, dated October 15, 1739. Colonial era document detailing the fines due to the first company or train of East Greenwich. 8 1/2" H x 7 5/8" W. 34th item: Colonial era land document for Robert Buchanan, Burlington County, NJ, recovered from Colin Campbell for five hundred acres of land, dated May 14, "...in the sixteenth year of our reign". Ink inscriptions en verso. 6 1/2" H x 8 7/8" W. 35th item: ALS. One page handwritten bifolium. From Lacy P. Whitall, Red Bank, NJ, to her sister Anna Maria Wood, Westtown Boarding School, Chester County, PA, dated November 3, 1815. 9 5/8" H x 15 3/4" W. 36th-47th items: Twelve (12) engravings, including eleven (11) depicting animals and one (1) depicting William Henry Harrison (1773-1841), 9th President of the United States in 1841, and his log cabin homestead. Ranging in size from 2 3/8" H x 8" W to 10 3/4" H x 8 1/2" W. All items housed in one (1) three ring binder. Binder - 11 3/4" H x 10 1/2" W x 1 3/4" D. Mid 18th/early 19th century.
Condition
All items with toning, acid burns, tears, foxing spots, dampstaining, etc. to be expected from age. 32nd item: Fragmentary condition. First and last several pages are not present.
