Item Details
Description
A Connecticut coverlet, by "Concurrence Seward Wilcox, AD. 1821", with important American and Canadian connections. Professionally restored (minor holes and fringe repair) in 1978 by the Royal Ontario Museum conservation department. This historic coverlet was next found at a Toronto antique market in the late 1980s. H: 11"; W: 17"; D: 13.5". With fringes, L: 105"; W: 84". As one of the first 50 Puritan settlers, William Wilcoxson (1601-1652), arrived in the New World aboard the ship Planter on April 5, 1635, finally settling in Stratford Connecticut by 1639. Six generations later, in 1772, the family line continued with the birth of twins Moses and Aaron Wilcoxson. Moses and wife Huldah Lord then had nine children, the first child in 1801 being Concurrence Seward Wilcox (son) who was born in Killingworth, Connecticut, where she resided until 1823. Concurrence’s father Moses and his identical twin Uncle Aaron worked for the Connecticut Land Company in the early 1800s and, as land agents, helped to found the town of Twinsburg Ohio (the settlement being named for the entrepreneurial twins). Concurrence Seward Wilcox then married Hezekiah Child in 1824, the coverlet no doubt part of her dowry. In the late 19th century, Concurrence’s nephew Charles Seward Wilcox moved north for business opportunities and helped to establish the Hamilton Steel and Iron Company in Ontario. The company eventually became Stelco and Charles Seward Wilcox went on to become a prominent philanthropist and held directorships in several major Canadian corporations in the early 20th century.
