Description
Standard glaze vase decorated with a full length portrait of Southern Cheyenne Chief, Wolf Robe, painted in 1901 by Grace Young based on an 1899 photograph by Frank Rinehart of Omaha, Nebraska. Wolf Robe was awarded the Benjamin Harrison Peace Medal in 1890 for his assistance in the Cherokee Commission. Marks include the Rookwood logo, date, shape 907 D, incised Chief Wolf Robe (Cheyenne) and the artist's monogram. There is also a wheel ground X although we see no reason for this piece to be designated a second. There is fine overall crazing and a faint line at the rim. Height is 10 1/2 inches. Typically well done portrait by Ms. Young. Elizabeth Rudisill Collection.
