[SOULT NICOLAS JEAN DE DIEU]: (1769-1851) Marshal of France, Duc de Dalmatie. An excellent manuscript document, nineteen pages, folio, July 1813, signed by Fririon, Secretary of the War Minister, to Marshal Duc de Damatie, in French. A lengthy report sent to Marshal Soult, being an extract of the correspondence related to the Army of Spain between 19th May and 2nd July 1813, including letters of the King of Spain, Joseph Bonaparte, Marshal Jourdan, and several Generals leading French troops in Spain. The list permits to follow day by day the route of Joseph Bonaparte and Jourdan, with letters sent from Valladolid, Palencia, Torquemada, Burgos, etc.. The letters include the 20th and 22nd June ones, day before and after the Battle of Vitoria, when British, Portuguese and Spanish armies under Duke of Wellington orders, broke the French army under King Joseph Bonaparte and Marshal Jourdan, and eventually lead to victory in the Peninsular War. Joseph Bonaparte, on his letter dated 20h June from Vitoria, states in part `The enemy continues with their troops movements…the army is without rations…Vitoria is overstocked with artillery…General Reille retreats after having been attacked by four English regiments…the Maucune division has lost 400 men… the King takes retreat position..´ A very interesting and lengthy document.
