Description
1850 Comic History of Rome Leech COLOR Illustrated Satire Literature Victorian
John Leech was a staff artist for "Punch" from its early issues in 1841. Gilbert Abbott A'Beckett (1811-1856), was one of the original staff members for "Punch," and a frequent contributor to the "Illustrated London News." He was also selected by Charles Dickens to dramatize the "Chimes" and other works. Tooley states that this edition is even "more rare than the Comic History of England.," which A’Beckett wrote before his ‘Comic History of Rome.’ This ‘Comic History of Rome’ is a satire against the Victorian society with the history of Rome as a backdrop.
This undated mid-19th century edition is illustrated with 10 hand-colored steel engravings and 98 in-text woodcuts by John Leech.
