Abraham Lincoln Autograph Letter Signed "A. Lincoln." One page, 4.75" x 8", "Executive Mansion" [Washington, D.C.]; October 3, 1861. A short note written just eight months after arriving at the White House, addressed to the Provost Marshal. It reads in full: "Dr Richards says you are willing to give him a pass if I say so. I confirm on Dr. Richards as a loyal man, and shall be glad for him to oblige, if the public service suffers no detriment. Give him the pass, if my consent is all that is wanting." Docketing on verso, written in pencil in an unknown hand reads in part: "Company D 1st Reg right under order of Genl McCall 2 ½ miles beyond an advance." General George A. McCall organized and led the Pennsylvania Reserves Division. Condition: Flattened mail folds with light toning at the folds and edges. Minor soiling on front and back.
