Description
A fine and extremely rare interpretation of the well-known Ottoman weapon, likely produced for presentation by the London Philhellenic Committee. A massive example superbly executed in silver, with grips of elephant set with four silver bosses on both sides, each representing a hero of the Greek Revolution. The tang, grip bands and ferrule all heavily gilded and overlaid with silver panels pierced and engraved in neoclassical vinework, with bands of roses at the ferrule continuing onto the blade reinforces. The superior blade quite broad and single-edged, with slight recurve, a narrow fuller at the spine and a deep central fuller to either side, with the first half blued and etched with moons and suns in splendor interspersed with stars. The scabbard with wooden core, wrought entirely of silver and elaborately embossed and engraved throughout in complex vinework motifs, terminating in a dolphin's head. 1820s. Ferrule slightly loose, a small section of the silver tangband removed in period, minor loss to reinforce. Reputed to have belonged to Edward John Trelawny, a close companion and compatriot of George, Lord Byron. Trelawny accompanied Byron to Greece after meeting him, Percy Bysshe Shelley and Mary Shelley in Pisa in 1822. Like Byron, he led an adventurous and often dangerous, life. Unlike Byron, however, after fighting the Turks in Greece alongside noted warlord Odysseas Androutsos for several years, Trelawny returned to England, where he lived to the age of 88, outliving Byron by 57 years. He is interred at the Protestant Cemetery, Rome beside Percy Bysshe Shelley. Represented on the right grip bosses are: Percy Bysshe Shelley, Lord Byron, Manto Mavrogenous, Demetrios Ypsilantis. On the left grip: Leonidas, Theodoros Kolokotronis, Konstantinos Kanaris, Petrobey Mavromichalis. Overall length 84cm. Condition I
