Description
Oil on canvas 30 x 20 in., 39 1/4 x 29 1/2 in. (framed) From askart.com: Clarence was the eldest son of Robert Henry Roe, a famous Victorian painter. Born in Birmingham, he later moved with his family to Hampstead in London. He lived in Scotland, but in 1860 settled in Yorkshire he would spend most of his life. The Roe family was composed of numerous artists with different specializations. Among these were the three brothers of Clarence, Robert Herbert, Percy, Colin Graeme and also one of his sisters, Eva Constance counted as a fine portraitist. Clarence's uncle, Alfred Frederick, better known as Fred Roe, was a remarkable artist who exhibited at the Royal Academy and was elected to the RBA in 1895 His landscapes are often set in the Scottish highlands: the color palette, as one might expect from an outdoor rural scene, is based on shades of gray and brown, illuminated by silvery tones perhaps to suggest the beginning of autumn, an example of the style of Roe, who studies nature 'en plein air' with abundance of details and with a precise brushstroke that reinforces the harmony of his works.
