Partly Engraved Promissory Note Signed "Jo O Shelby," 7.75" x 3". Toning to right edge, else fine.


Handwritten bank notations cross "J O O" of signature. Lexington, Kentucky, January 31, 1859. Vignette at left. "Four Months after date Pay to the order of Cave J. Kirtley at the Merchants Bank St Louis Three Thousand Dollars for Value received and charge to account of Jo O Shelby To Cary Gratz Co.. St Louis." Endorsed on verso: "Cary Gratz & Co. / June 3 3000" [probably not personally by Cary Gratz].


Perpendicular endorsement on face of check:"Accepted Cary Gratz & Co." [probably by Cary Gratz]. In purple ink: "Protected for non payment / St Louis June 3rd 1859 / Andrew Gelleatt Notary Public."


Cary Gratz protected stepbrother Jo Shelby for non-payment!


Cary Gratz was a son of Benjamin Gratz. Jo Shelby was the stepson of Benjamin Gratz. Rebecca Gratz was the sister of

Benjamin Gratz.


Rebecca Gratz (1781-1869), a Philadelphia philanthropist, founded the first Hebrew Sunday School in America and participated as a founding member in several other nonsectarian and Jewish charitable organizations which were among the first to be organized and run by women.
