An important and early travel journal. The author recounts her travels around the American east coast, where she was pursued by a number of "smitten suitors." Butler is best known by her maiden/stage name "Frances Anne Kemble" under which she wrote a number of plays, acted on both sides of the Atlantic and wrote her "Journal of a Residence on a Georgia Plantation" (1863). Robinson calls this "an uncomfortably gauche work whose indiscretions offended several prominent Americans, and which the English public quite adored." (Howes B 1051; Robinson, pp. 240-41; Sabin 9632).
