In 1863 Richard Burton was sent by Her Majesty's command on a mission to the King of Dahomey to apply pressure to cease the slave trade and other abuses including human sacrifice and cruelty to animals. According to Isabel Burton in the preface, "Gelele said that his prisoners of war represented his income, that his own people would kill him if he stopped 'the customs,' that if he received £50.000 a year he would attempt it..." Light bumps at spine ends, a few scuffs to cloth; a few repaired hinges, nick to front free endpaper of Vol. II at fore-edge, mild foxing; very good or better.
