This lot consists of a graphite and colored pencil illustration on paper, done in the Post-Impressionist style of Charles Prendergast (Canadian-American, 1863-1948). Handwritten inscriptions at bottom of composition read, "View from window of Ocean House - Tom's River - N.J." and "C.E. Prendergast 1917". This unframed piece measures approximately 7" x 5.25".

Image depicts a quaint street corner with automobiles of the early 1900s zooming past. In the foreground, an American flag drapes, twisted, around a diagonal pole. A perfect snapshot of a coastal town at the turn of the century. This piece would make a fine addition to any collection.

Reverse side of piece features the handwritten inscription, "Charles Prendergast. New Jersey 1917." A smaller, handwritten inscription is written inversely at bottom of piece and is largely illegible to this author.

Charles Prendergast (Canadian-American, 1863-1948) was a painter, framer, and designer from Newfoundland, Canada. He was the younger brother of the painter Maurice Prendergast (Canadian-American, 1858-1924). The Prendergast brothers received their formal artistic training in Paris, France, before permanently emigrating to the United States some years later. Charles and Maurice Prendergast were lifelong companions and collaborators. The profound philosophical intimacy between the two is reflected in the playful spontaneity and the color that decorates each of their paintings, as well as the flexibility with which each handles his craft.

Overall good condition. Edges are bent, chipped and creased. Some tape remnants also visible around the edges. Overall image remains solid and unobstructed by edge wear. A crisp, clear, and charming picture. Please see photos for further detail.
