Samuel John Barnes (British, United Kingdom, 1883 - 1962)
Samuel John Barnes (1847-1901) was a British landscape painter. He was born in Birmingham where he studied at the Birmingham School of Art and later in London. Some of Barnes's best paintings were of Scottish highland landscapes including highland cattle and red deer. He painted in the vicinity of Royal Deesside (Balmoral Castle) where his paintings were highly regarded by Queen Victoria and also by Queen Alexandra. Exhibited: Royal Academy 1884, 1886.
The provenance of these Samuel John Barnes paintings is impeccable. In 1896 they were part of a series of paintings inspected by Royalty when The Duke and Duchess of Saxe-Coberg made a purchase.
The following scripted text is scanned from the back of the painting "Highland Cattle Loch Vennacher". It is signed by Barnes. To see the scan in detail click here. Click on picture to enlarge.
